Buffalo the Label was founded in 2023 in Sri Lanka by Lauren—a teacher, singer, and entrepreneur from Wales who has called the island home since 2019.
A long-time fashion enthusiast, Lauren had spent years experimenting with clothing design and collaborating with local seamstresses on a freelance basis. Having previously worked in the charity sector for an organisation that championed sustainable development projects around the world, she was inspired to create a business that offered more than just beautiful clothes. Her goal was to provide the local women she was working with the opportunity to access long-term, well-paid reliable employment that could complement the Sri Lankan village lifestyle.

In 2023, Lauren (pictured) brought her vision to life by hiring a small team of talented seamstresses who work on a flexible basis, and launched a cohesive clothing line centred around block-printed fabrics—a textile tradition she has always loved.
Jess (pictured below), a medical editor and talented seamstress based in Manchester, was quickly invited by Lauren to join the team as the business began to grow. The friends reconnected over their shared love of fashion—the very passion that had first brought them together 13 years earlier at university.

With Lauren's flair for design and Jess's talent for craftsmanship, the business grew dramatically as Buffalo became a holiday fashion staple, growing from four to fourteen stockists along the coastal towns of Sri Lanka in 2024.
Together, they’re spearheading Buffalo’s expansion across the UK, Europe, and international markets, bringing ethical, purpose-led fashion to a global audience.
Buffalo the Label is a proudly women-owned startup, completely self-funded and built from the ground up. They remain passionate about growing and sustaining the brand through a thoughtful, slow fashion approach.
